Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Yes, a #NoGadgetHangout is indeed real and very much possible! We have been doing this since 2021 across 2 Nigerian cities (Abuja & Jos). The hack is in our ability to schedule. It’s a gathering where we consciously choose to disconnect to enjoy international conversations free from digital distractions.

We have a designated area where the devices are safely kept for the duration of the hangout. We also allow participants to keep their devices on them away from eye-view and with all notifications turned off. This ensures that we’re all fully present and engaged with each other.

It is often said that we miss moments trying to capture memories on our devices.

At the #NoGadgetHangout, memories are made the old-fashioned way – through genuine interactions, shared experiences, and being fully present in the moment. Whether it’s playing games, engaging in conversations, or simply enjoying each other’s company.

The absence of technology allows us to connect more deeply and create lasting memories.

We also have a dedicated photographer who is not part of the project capturing the event for educational purposes. Participants are also always provided with pens and jotters to document their learnings.

We can encourage meaningful conversations by:

  • Being present and not phubbing (using our devices when engaging with people)
  • Actively listening to each other,
  • Asking open-ended questions and sharing personal experiences and insights, and creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves.

The more intentional we are, the more meaningful we can make the conversations to be

We’ve conversation prompts designed to engage our organic thinking and communicative skills. We use a peer learning model to ensure we leverage the education, exposure, and experiences of participants in the discussions. All topics discussed aim to help us use technology in a way that keeps us productive and well while avoiding the associated harms. One of our key conversation prompts is the Vivify Card Games.

The top 4 tips that we share are:

  • Be intentional about your screen time
  • Know how to schedule your online and offline activities
  • Take screen breaks and not just breaks
  • And don’t keep engaging in face-to-face interactions with friends and family.
